The doctrine of the incarnation of Christ has been used in constructive theology rather than just being wraped in polemical conversations lately. One example of this would be Peter Enn’s approach to understanding Evangelicals and the Problem of the Old Testament, another example prior to Enns would be Darrell L. Guder’s use of the analogy for understanding ‘mission’. Guder believes that much clarity for the future of missiology is found in the incarnation as an analogy for mission, as well as an answer for some of the modern trends in missiology like imperial colonialism.

Consider Guder’s definition of incarnational mission, taken from his short work The Incarnation and The Church’s Witness;

“By incarnational mission I mean the understanding and practice of Christian witness that is rooted in and shaped by the life, ministry, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus.” (xii)

What is helpful about the analogy of incarnation for understanding the nature, task, and goal of mission? If incarnation is the analogy for mission, has the Church in the previous century been incarnational in its mission? How can the Church be incarnational in the present century, and what are some things that might challenge the Church in its incarnational mission?
